Every year in the middle of the winter, when most European countries experience a cold wave, a number of professional cycling teams gather to train in the south of Spain to get ready for the season. We shot a 8min documentary piece about the Garmin-Barracuda-Team, training and getting to know each other before they head into major races together. The film is part of agency Make Studio’s campaign for Garmin’s online winter training platform.

Shooting across the best of the British weather from gale force rainstorm to a mild sunset, we produced a 2min film portraying Steve Way, who is a UK marathon success story.

Steve, who started running when others consider quitting, turned his life around, gave up smoking, lost 5 stone and worked himself to be one of the top runners of the country. And all that thanks to a Garmin training device!

The film is set under bridges, along roads and between buildings and shows the hard training that runners have to embrace during the winter months. Highlighting the USP of Forerunner 610, which simulates a virtual racer, Steve chases his “ghost” across the season.

I am very proud about the amazing piece of music that we managed to license for this film, which is by none other then UK world music legend Nitin Sawhney. Sawhney’s score, together with some subtle sound effects, complement the film with a great deal of mood and atmosphere.

We were shooting for two glorious days in the Alps (Timmelsjoch, Ötztal) to produce an epic film featuring Christophe LeMével, a French pro-cyclist using Garmin Edge800. The bicycle computer is a coaching device that monitors your physical performance, tracks your position and simulates a virtual partner that you can race against.

The location recce on Timmelsjoch was only possible with a snowplough as the road was fully covered with snow. Serious effort using salt and “big boys toys” was needed to get the road ice free and in condition to shoot the film.

Christophe was brilliant and the footage we captured across the days and in magic hour sunset was stunning. Nevermind the serious chill which cast and crew had to put up with … gives it that extra bit of realism.

Hafzoo wins pitch to shoot international winter campaign for Garmin. Together with UK agency Make Studio (CD Bainbridge below), Hafzoo developed a film concept that focuses on environment, atmosphere and Garmin’s state-of-the-art technology.

The two films will feature French cycling superstar Christophe LeMével and British running legend Steve Way. Award winning photographer Rama Knight will produce stunning images for the stills campaign.

Both stills and film will portray the intense winter training, which professional athletes have to endure to reach their desired performance for the season ahead.

Recently I saw an exhibition of Danielle Van Ark’s photo series „The Mounted Life“ and was struck by the humour, storytelling and compositions portraying taxidermy in museum storage hangars around the world. She does a remarkable job of capturing the internal spirit and nature of these creatures, as if they awoke and found themselves suddenly stuck inside the husk of a giant, modern facility.

The photos are composed wonderfully – a herd of bewildered impalas, or a flock of birds trying to poke up through their plastic cover, proving that even after removing a creature from both it’s environment and of life itself, their behaviors and innate traits still find a way to come through.

I am so proud to share this funky dance rehearsal for a brilliant new commercial that I was allowed to direct.

Nothing is certain but death and bad taxidermy.

These pictures are from a Danish fellow who has created a Facebook page that brings us “Dårligt udstoppede dyr,” or “Badly Stuffed Animals.” On the back foot: This two-legged donkey gives new meaning to the term wonky donkey.

Do you have these in a size 7? The taxidermists even managed to get creative, gutting the insides of a pair of moles to make a pair of shoes! Some pieces are truly nuts, check it out.

When I started planning for Tiger & Swan I wanted to work with textures, materials and taxidermy that resonated with the cloths and outfits suggested for the film. When scouting for locations it soon became apparent that I was looking for two contrasting sets: a warm wood built barn filled with hey stacks and a cool, concrete underpass with a geometric feel to allow graphic compositions.

I came up with a number of scenarios, sketching them out over the locations shots and drafted the themes of animal prints and camouflage textures into the story.

We shot the film over one day and were allowed to use the amazing pieces of taxidermy by no one less then Peter Morass, who won the European championships in taxidermy 2004. He came on set and helped us to prep them and the only thing we had to hope for was no gusts of wind during the takes, as it propelled the suspended swan around the underpass. We were lucky.

Postproduction took a little while and the folks at Wildruf put in a lot of hours and did a fantastic job to get the visual effects right. It was a great project and I am thrilled with the result. People are intrigued: Are these layered photographs, but can I see them just moving a little? Are the animals 3D? Can it be that the tigers are copulating? … YES, they are!
